Winter, Colour, Scarves

This weeks post for collegefashionista.com

Photobucket

What better way is there to oppose the winter blues than with a spot of colour? This Fashionista is definitely in agreement with her colourful attire from head to toe.

I absolutely adore the vintage feel that this outfit holds. The timeless shabby-chic faded denim jacket is a must-have for any Fashionista, whilst a pair of grey tights is a great alternative to black, making the outfit that bit more vibrant and unique. With a statement skirt and a simple pair of shoes, this outfit is a great example of how to balance quirky and simple.

What I think ties the look together so perfectly has to be the vintage patterned scarf. Cosy – a must for the cold weather – fashionable and unique, it’s an absolute must in your winter wardrobe. And where can you purchase such an item? Well, I would have to suggest raiding the rails of your local charity shops, as very often you can find the most unique scarves from second hand. Also a visit to a good market is bound to bring you to one, such as Shoreditch, Greenwich or Portobello. For a simpler and quicker option, Topshop currently have a really great selection, and most unusually, handmade cosmetics company Lush have an absolutely brilliant array of them for next to nothing.

So, no excuses girls! Get yourself into town and treat yourself, a lovely scarf gives any outfit that finishing touch.

For my Illustration project. The brief was to make a set of posters to advertise the new East London line. I decided to also make a slideshow out of them to show in tube stations along the escalators.

I should start off by saying that this photo is well overdue and does it no justice, but I'm very very happy with it. Thank you lovely cousin Tash for the initial design (above), and Goska (Evil From The Needle) for doing such a good job.

Bags, bags, bags

This weeks post for collegefashionista.com

Photobucket

It’s become an absolute Winter Wonderland in the lovely city of London this past week, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it; snowball fights, snow angels, warming hot chocolates, wholesome soups and the opportunity to dress the part of course, which is exactly what this Fashionista has done.

It’s essential to wrap up warm in these snowy conditions, and this Fashionista is completely on the money with her lovely attire. Not only does it tick all the boxes of a guide of how to keep warm, but she does it with the utmost style.

I absolutely love her cosy coat teamed with her adorable hat – I love the fact that there is a hint of the colour beige in the detail of the hat to link it perfectly to her coat.

Teamed with a simple pair of black leggings and a splash of colour in her scarf, the outfit resonates trend, but what I think completes her ensemble perfectly has to be her patent Chanel bag. Of course, not all of us can afford such luxury, but there are so many options for us to get the look. Faux bags are available left, right and centre; I would suggest looking at eBay and markets for such items. You can of course hunt through charity shops to see if you get lucky, there can be some truevintage gems in amongst the junk, that’s for sure. But designer make or not, it’s the idea of a statement bag that I think will complete any look this year; it’s the perfect accessory.

College Fashionista, 29/11/10

Photobucket

As I spotted this Fashionista walking down the streets of London, I instantly fell in love with her resonating attitude and simple, geek chic style.

Wearing her hair loose and messy, with a simple yet quirky outfit of neutral tones, this Fashionista is the definition of trendy. I absolutely love her loose fittingcoat, which she wears open showing a mischievous bit of leg – I am a big believer of skirts and dresses all year round. Teamed with a pair of lovely, simple black suedeboots (idyllic for the inevitably chilly days ahead), a vintage brown leather handbag – imperative for every Fashionista’s wardrobe, and a unique bohemian scarf to keep that nasty chill away, this outfit is just great.

What I personally think sets the look off has to be her glasses, giving her that geek chic edge that is so very trendy at present. Whether you have perfect vision or in fact need them, why not make a statement? However simple your outfit, they’ll give it that trendy edge, and who doesn’t want that?

So the big question, where can you get the look? For those of us with 20/20 vision, Rokit, Urban Outfitters and of course my personal favourite eBay all have a great selection of clear lens glasses, so there’s no need for us to miss out on the look, and for those of you that do, don’t think that you have to stick to the (sometimes limited) opticians selection, why not buy a pair of vintage frames and get prescription lenses to fit? There are no limitations – treat them as a fashion accessory; make a statement and have some fun.

Considering the fact that I haven't posted anything recently, I thought I'd make a couple of posts with some of my old work. This was the first fashion shoot that I did, back in 2006. Feels like so long ago now!

I sit here, my thoughts my only company. All I want is an escape. An escape from this room, from this house, from my mind. I yearn to go outdoors; to taste the open air, to feel the gaze of the sun on my skin. I'm trapped.

The Academic, The Trendsetter, The Fashionista

Did this style report for College Fashionista forgetting the fact that we're not allowed to shoot in front of a white background, oops! I just completely fell in love with my housemates outfit that day.

Photobucket

Easy and comfortable were the two adjectives that this Fashionista stated as best describing her style, and this outfit completely defines just that.

As soon as I saw her I fell in love with it; the high waisted linen trousers, the loose fitted Blondie top, the intricacy of the heart shaped pendant, all complete with a simple yet stylish pair of heeled boots. With her hair tied back in a messy bun, and such simple, natural make-up, she makes this look seem simply effortless.

The thing that makes this outfit so special has to be the trousers. They’re as fashionable as anything, yet so comfortable, simple and wearable. I just love the bow detail, and the versatile, khaki colouring that can be paired with anything and everything; whether it be bright bold and eccentric, such as a shocking fuschia pink, or neutral, soft and subtle, similar to those in this particular outfit.

This Fashionista was lucky enough to pick them up for a bargain price at a Reiss outlet. You can copy the look by having a browse in Reiss itself, or for a cheaper option, Topshop also have some lovely high waisted trousers.

The great thing is that you can wear them to a lecture with a pair of brogues and be perfectly at ease, yet dress them up with some killer heels and a crop top for a unique ‘going out’ look.

So, comfort? Absolutely. Ease? Completely. Fashion? Without a shadow of a doubt. It would be positively wrong not to purchase a pair of these, and seeing a girl as trendy as this, how can you not be inspired?

Forgotten

I had the urge to write. I thought I might as well do it on this as opposed to a word document. Literally did this in ten minutes so don't judge it too much. I might make it into a short story at some point if I have the time and some inspiration as to what comes next...

I wake up. I'm frightened, confused and alone. Silence. Silence apart from the beating of my heart; rhythmically, but fast. Too fast. Where am I? I open my eyes and look around these unfamiliar surroundings. Something tells me that I've been here before but I just can't place why. Have I seen these walls? These four walls surrounding me, sparse and bare. Slowly I rise to my feet. I look at my attire and I seem to be dressed in a t-shirt. But is it mine? It's far too large and I swear not to recognise it. What's happened? Why can't I remember? It's as if my memories been taken. By how? Why?

Slowly, I exit the room to yet more silence and unfamiliarity. I see a figure, sitting in a chair some way away, reading silently. I approach cautiously, wandering with every step if it is the right thing to do. But what else can be done? I need answers.

My body seems to get heavier with every step; more reluctant to approach almost. Is this my own doing? I simply can't tell. I feel something hot against my side, and realise for the first time that there is a pocket to the t-shirt, and there is something inside... glowing somehow. Although I am fast approaching the figure, my steps slow and come to a halt as I remove the object and place it into the palm of my hand.

I have never seen something so beautiful, so intricate, so special. I am so sure of its importance, yet certain that I have never seen it before. How did it come into my possession?

As I speculate, I realise that in my deep thought, I have been walking towards the unknown figure. In shock, I release my gaze from the object in my palm, and look instead into the eyes of the stranger. Fiery red eyes, surely not human.

"All will be explained" she whispers, "but first, you must give me the pendant".

So it begins! I am now a fully fledged Style Guru for College Fashionista. I will be posting a Style Advice Of The Week article each Monday, complete with a street style photo of a Fashionista/o, on collegefashionista.com

Vivienne Westwood once commented on the importance of fashion, stating that, “it is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well.”

When I walk around the campus of Goldsmiths I am overwhelmed by it's Fashionistas. When I get the tube into central London I am positively weighed down by hipsters; I’m surrounded by trendsetters’ everyday and I simply can’t wait to capture all my favourite styles.

Personally, I am obsessed with the sixties. Where would I be without the miniskirt? And who other do I have to thank for it than the one and only Mary Quant, an ex-Goldsmiths student, legendary fashion designer and my main source of fashion inspiration.

I pride myself on the fact that I don’t own a pair of jeans, thus forcing my wardrobe to be brimming full with dresses, from the sixties, to the noughties, and every decade in between.

I love finding vintage treasures in charity shops and scrolling through page after page on eBay tracking down the gems. My best buy to date would have to be a vintage Moschino bag I found in a charity shop for eight pounds some years ago.

I’m an aspiring fashion photographer with a love for writing so this position as Fashion Guru couldn’t be more perfect. I can’t wait to get started and I hope to bring you some great and unique reports.

Nonchalant, comfortable and above all trendy; this Fashionisto has got the Autumn/Winter look spot on, effortlessly combining a perfect balance of vintage and high street in such a way that would make any man envious and any woman drool.

Although it pains me to admit it, winter is fast approaching, bringing with it an offensive chill to the air to say the very least. You know what that means… say goodbye to your beloved denim jacket until next year, and prepare to layer up.

This Fashionisto is on the money with his high street bought leather jacket; not only is it the perfect item to keep you warm, but it’s also classic, timeless and as trendy as anything.

Underneath this, he wears a checkered shirt; a staple sixties inspired item, which can be seen as nothing but modish and cool. This, teamed with a pair of vintage brogues is positively faultless. Brogues are without doubt this winters most sought after footwear, and don’t think that you have to spend an arm and a leg on a pair of designers, or traipse through vintage store after vintage store tracking them down, high street shops are recreating them left, right and centre.

Complete with a pair of worn jeans and a simple black scarf, we can only congratulate this Fashionisto for his impeccable taste and ability to put together such an awe inspiring arrangement, demonstrating the perfect example of a winter outfit, which is beyond trendy and cool.
